After making it to Game 7 of the 2025 World Series, I knew opening day would be special this year. Since I didn’t get tickets to the game with my half-season tickets, I decided at the last minute to buy a 500-level ticket mainly to get into the building, wander the 100 level, and take in the overall excitement as we celebrated the previous season and looked ahead to the one getting started.
BTW, I never made it to that seat.
While I knew the Blue Jays were going to be celebrating their 50th season quite a bit this year, I didn’t expect a 30-minute introduction and show to celebrate it and to honour the 2025 team. The 100-level concourse even has a series of displays with a ton of memorabilia, as well as an area to view the two trophies celebrating their 1992 & 1993 World Series wins.
The Blue Jays seemed loose and had a bit of swagger all game long, which didn’t surprise me after how they played in 2025. What was nice is that the packed stadium did its part as well, cheering more than usual with real passion and excitement for the club.
Kevin Gausman had a strong start to the season, pitching six innings and giving up only one run on a home run. His 11 strikeouts and no walks were pretty surprising this early in the season, when most pitchers are still building on the work done in spring training.
With Jeff Hoffman giving up a home run to the Athletics’ Shea Langeliers in the top of the ninth to tie the game, Toronto faced a much tougher situation heading into the bottom of the ninth.
With two outs, the Blue Jays managed a couple of hits from Kazuma Okamoto and Ernie Clement to get runners in scoring position for Andrés Giménez, who walked off the game with a single to right field.
