There was an excitement in the air this opening day in Toronto that was different than previous ones. While the usually full house is always excited to see their team start a new season, the fans — and the players alike — were giddy with pride to build on last year’s improbable World Series appearance.
The cheers at the start of the game were louder than usual. The first at-bat celebrations were more heartfelt, and the pre-game ceremony felt genuine and intentionally real.
Toronto’s Opening Day starter, Kevin Gausman offered up a strong performance to start the season, pitching six innings and giving up only one run on a home run. His eleven strikeouts with no walks was a pretty clean line at a time when most pitchers are still building back up from the offseason.
With the score tied at the end of the top of the ninth on the second home run of the game by the Athletics’ Shea Langeliers, the Blue Jays only had a half inning to try and pull out a win or go to extra innings.
With two outs, Kazuma Okamoto managed a single to right field to get on base. Ernie Clement then doubled to left field to send Okamoto setting up Toronto well to score a run. Andrés Giménez ended up walking off the game with a single to right field to give the Blue Jays and their fans the first win of the 2026 season.
