I dug up this ticket because the person I went to see David Letterman with for some reason offered, almost 20 years later, to have us go on a similar adventure! I got the call to get in a car, leave for New York City at dawn, go to the taping of a reality show, see as much of the city as we can and then drive back the next day. Even though I now prefer flying and hate reality television, I couldn’t pass up the chance to spend 2 days with one of my oldest friends.
The show we saw in 1994 was actually quite special. While Martin Mull had been on Letterman many times and Anthony LaPaglia wasn’t much of a star yet, Kiss was the musical guest. That year a tribute album to Kiss was released, and they were there to play with the Gin Blossoms. It was pretty surreal.
After the show, we went for dinner at a falafel joint in Greenwich Village. The food must have been pretty good because when the waiter came back to clear our plates, he said to me “did you even taste it?!”. I do have a habit of eating way too quickly.
The highlight of the night is pretty memorable in hindsight. We went to a small comedy club near the restaurant, and maybe 4-5 others were there. We got a chance to see 2 comedians I recognized from their recent appearances on The Late Show. Little did we know at the time what would happen to the careers of Dave Attell and, Dave Chappell.
BTW, Alec Baldwin has a fantastic interview with David Letterman on his podcast. Enjoy it, I did.
