A week earlier, I decided on a short trip to Ottawa to take in some sights, like the Parliament Building, the National Gallery, and the War Museum. More importantly, the reason for this trip was to visit my mom and stepdad. Over the last few months, I began making a case for them to move back to Montreal.
In addition to being there without any family or few friends, they were getting older, and I was sure they would need more of my time, attention, and financial support. Being in another city limited what I could do and how quickly I could get there to help.
My stepdad was very open to the idea and receptive to every one of my arguments and reasoning. My mom, on the other hand, dug in her heels, and hard. While she admitted she didn’t like her house, her neighbours and couldn’t take care of herself without my step-dad’s help, she refused to move.
Little did I know at the time she would be back in Montreal in a few months, but not in the way I would have expected.
