With Nathan Lukes, George Springer and Addison Barger each with three hits and accounting for all eight Blue Jays runs tonight, Toronto managed to win its fourth game against the Yankees and sweep the series to take sole possession of first place in the American League East.

For a few years now, I’ve loved watching Aaron Judge hit, knowing I was seeing one of the best hitters in baseball history. With five intentional walks in this series, I think the Blue Jays have come to agree that there is no reason to pitch to him in any type of leveraged situation.

Going through Reddit when I got back to my hotel after the game, it was clear that the Blue Jays and Yankees fan bases were reacting quite differently to the results of this four-game series. The Blue Jays fans were clearly gloating and joyous:

“They came in with the lead in the division….They left in a 51st state of disappointment” — “8 for 14, 4 HRs, 11 RBIs, 4 walks. Springer started this series with an OPS of .822 and now he’s at .891” — “Elbows Up!” — “Buckle up. The Jays are rolling now. This is the best we’ve had it in a decade.”

While the tone of the Yankees fans was one of sheer frustration and anger at the whole organization:

“Brian Cashman, you’ve done it again. Quite the team you’ve built to waste more of Aaron Judge’s career” — “Fire Boone tonight, you pussies. Choked away an 8 game lead in less than a month.” — “Not to defend the Yankees, but you have to give Springer credit. That was one of the greatest 3 game stretches I have ever saw.” — “Yankees Last 20 Games: 14 losses, 159 runners left on base, 79 runs”

With tonight’s win, the Blue Jays are now one game ahead of the Yankees and atop the AL East at 49-38. This is also the first time in Blue Jays history that they swept the New York Yankees in a four-game series at home.
