As one of the best-attended and most popular games of the year, it was a treat to have the division rival and first-place New York Yankees in town for Canada Day.

While the Blue Jays expected a tough day with Yankees ace Max Fried on the mound, the stadium erupted alongside George Springer when he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. When Andrés Giménez followed up with a three-run home run as well in the same inning, there was a growing sense that this Blue Jays team may be stronger than anyone was giving it credit for.

I suspect that with a bit of fear of using their bullpen, they left Fried in through six innings before bringing in their bullpen in the seventh, which Toronto proceeded to tear apart with five runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. After the Yankees tied up the game in the top of the eighth, George Springer homered for a second time today with a grand slam on top of an Ernie Clement run to increase Toronto’s lead to 9-4. In the eighth, it’s Clement again with an RBI on a walk and then another Springer single to score two more and increase the lead to seven runs.

While today’s win was a team effort, it was built on the shoulders of George Springer, who had a 3-hit, 7-RBI day to leap the Blue Jays into second place and only one game back of New York in the AL East.

Happy Canada Day!
